Day tour of Hessen exploring the Ancient Abbey at Lorsch, The Rheingau wine region & the Rudesheim Altstadt.
The Abbey in Lorsch is nearly 1300 years old, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. Set in beautiful green fields in the Hessen countryside, it is an attractive as well as historically fascinating place to visit. Nearby the abbey ruins lies the charming village of Lorsch, filled with timber buildings and quaint cafes.
Just a short journey outside of Lorsch is the famous town of Rudesheim, a sparkling town on the banks of the Rhine. Rudesheim lies in the heart of the famous Rheingau wine region, making this town a delightful and delicious place to visit.
We will take a walk down the famous, Drosselgasse with its many bars and restaurants and live music in the summer months. Here we will have lunch in the Schloss Restaurant, a quality authentic restaurant serving local specialties.
The Rudesheim Old Town is also worth exploring before we visit a renowned local winery to taste some of the local wines and visit their expansive cellar. Following the winery, we will take the cable car up over the picturesque vineyards to visit the imposing statue of Germania, erected in 1872 to honour the newly formed German nation.
Then we can walk through the vineyards and down to our cruise ship to admire some famous castles on the banks of the Rhine. The boat trip will end in Rudesheim and dinner in an authentic local restaurant.
