Hello! My name is Henry

As a child I was lucky to travel to many interesting places including a ranch holiday in Wyoming, a five-day trip to Russia, to Canada, Egypt, and all over Europe.

After finishing school in Wiltshire, England, I hit the road again, this time traveling for 10 months to Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. I loved visiting new places and having new and authentic experiences – seeing crocodiles close-up, bungee jumping, scuba diving, and meeting all kinds of interesting, different people.

Studying Ancient History at Newcastle University in Northern England set me up for a bigger world odyssey. I spent 4 years teaching English in Asia, where I was able to travel in India, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and China. This trip also included spending 6 months living with nomads in the steppes of Mongolia.

A year later, fate took me to Phoenix, Arizona where I spent the sunny winter months working in the local youth hostel. Curiosity then led me to hitchhike to Fairbanks, Alaska. Outside a small town called Nenana, I worked as a dog-musher and enjoyed the serene wide open spaces during the day and the Aurora Borealis at night.

Henry Cottam Portrait - Tourists

10 years ago I moved to Heidelberg to be closer to my daughter. As a foreigner, I was keen to learn about the German language, culture, and history. I wanted to know everything about my new hometown, and this led me to take the course to be an official Heidelberg Castle guide in 2014. Since then I have been giving tours of Heidelberg, the surrounding region, and Alsace,France – an area I consider exceptionally beautiful.

As a traveler, I was always seeking authentic experiences, which gave me a real understanding and insight into the new part of the world I was exploring. As a tour guide, I strive to give my clients meaningful tours which leave them with a real connection and appreciation for the area they are visiting.

On my tours you will get a first-hand understanding of what it’s like to live in Germany today as well as a lens into life in the past. But most of all, I help clients to get the most out of their travels by making sure they see the best sites, eat in top restaurants & leave with a real appreciation of where they have been.
